Abstract
Malta, with its diversified free-market economy, is an attractive location for international business - in complex manufacturing (electronics, pharmaceuticals, software development) and in services (financial, gaming, shipping, information and communications technology [ICT]). With a well-established regulatory environment now based on European Union (EU) laws, with a favorable tax environment and attractive government incentives, it is widely agreed that the presence of a skilled, loyal, well-educated and multilingual workforce is one of the strongest reasons to set up a business in this Mediterranean island. The smallest member of the EU, Malta is a well-kept secret - it does not advertise and market itself as much as it perhaps could. Its size limitations mean that the existing Maltese window of opportunity will not be open forever. Already, the infrastructure (such as roads and housing) is showing signs of coming under pressure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
